PGA Tour, why aren’t women competing in the same location?
I don’t understand why there isn’t a combined womens and mens PGA championship at the same location. Does it have anything to do with sponsorship?
It has more to do with organizations than sponsorship.When the PGA was first formed years back all pros were included, both the club pros and the playing pros. At that time playing pros were in the minority with their main source of income coming from exhibitions with top amateurs and at private country clubs giving demonstrations. The advent of television changed the whole atmosphere of golf. Along came Arnold Palmer , a very charismatic individual whose personality put the modern golfer in front of the public. Then the organization split into those who are club pros and those who play the tour. This was a great market for advertisers, despite the stupidity of one Massachusetts representative named Bernie Franks whose lifestyle is suspect and intelligence questionable. The women led by Patty Berg, Babe Zacharias, Louise Suggs initiated the LPGA which has formed its own tour for the ladies who were professional golfers. The men are still the main draw. The ladies have become dominated by the South Koreans. With the economy as soft as it is presently, the purse dollars of both tours will be effected greatly.
